How Weird Is My Audience? I Polled 15,408 People To Find Out

I asked my audience six questions: some sensible, some ridiculous. I compared their results to the public. And the results were… interesting. • Graphics by William Marler: https://wmad.co.uk and his Lungs Podcast: https://lungspodcast.co.uk

I’m a two-space kinda guy. It’s how I was taught when I was 9 and I like the way it looks. Maybe those are dumb reasons but whatever.

  2. Takase on January 6, 2021 at 11:28 pm

probably the audience here uses a linter

  6. gasparsigma on January 6, 2021 at 11:35 pm

I didn’t know two spaces after a period was a thing. It makes me distrust the results from the polled "general audience"

Why the hell did I name the owl Jacob

  11. Joe Bonaiuto on January 6, 2021 at 11:46 pm

I think the smell question might have caused people to ‘see’ an item with that smell, not actually imagine the smell………to imagine chocolate mint, they saw cocoa beans and mint leaves, or a chocolate bar with a green stripe…and just said yes they could imagine smells.

"only one feminine name in the top 100, Athena" uhh hedwig??

  13. Lewis Irwin on January 6, 2021 at 11:49 pm

    Two important questions:

Did you deliberately choose "Mist Challenge" for the pun value of *fogging* the results?

And more importantly, exactly _what_ are we comparing ourselves _to_ in terms of weirdness? What _is_ weird?

  14. Isopod on January 6, 2021 at 11:50 pm

I think two spaces after a period is just an English thing. Different languages have different punctuation styles. For example, the French put spaces around question marks and quotation marks.

I’ma cat person! May be because we are 50+% European? I’ve heard something about Toxoplasma gondii, and European countries have cat infestations.

How weird is very normal ? Weird-ception ?

  20. dantheflyingman32 on January 6, 2021 at 11:57 pm

I think it would have been cool to have a timer on how long it took each person to take the survey so you could see if the general public really were rushing through it 🙂

  26. westrim on January 7, 2021 at 12:01 am

There’s a correlation between intelligence and cat preference. Other studies and surveys have also shown this.

  27. go-intermediate on January 7, 2021 at 12:03 am

So you would be very weird by thinking of you’re self as normal

  28. Mr.Person on January 7, 2021 at 12:05 am

Eric. The owl is 100% eric

  29. jaison jaijohn on January 7, 2021 at 12:05 am

i think the real question is "How Weird Can The American Public Be?"

  30. Hi-Tech_Soldier on January 7, 2021 at 12:07 am

Well folks, time to create the mist challenge.

  32. Alexander Heubel on January 7, 2021 at 12:07 am

When you said that your audience considers themselves ever so slightly more weird than average, wouldn’t that actually raise the average?

It appears that your audience is slightly more weird than the mode.

  33. Michael on January 7, 2021 at 12:09 am

Wow! I said Henry in my head before you showed the answers 😯

  34. S R on January 7, 2021 at 12:10 am

Cats are for women and sissy men, so I think this shows you have a lot of sissy men in your fan base

  35. Billy Bob Jamal on January 7, 2021 at 12:13 am

Cats don’t deserve to live among us. Shame on anybody who picked a cat over a dog.

  36. TwoOneEight on January 7, 2021 at 12:13 am

    You look like FakeJake

  38. BOYD1981 on January 7, 2021 at 12:15 am

I wonder if the "Mist Challenge" people are perhaps misremembering some kind of cleaning product advertising campaign, the Daz Doorstep Challenge immediately springs to mind for me as well as countless other ads where two dirty things get dipped in to two different fish tanks of water.
Also I named the owl Percy.

  39. A Bleese on January 7, 2021 at 12:18 am

As for explaining your audience being more cat people than dog people. Could it be that your audience tends to be younger and, possibly, more urban? Therefore, they are more likely to live in an apartment than a house. Therefore, they are more likely to have a cat and consider themselves to be a cat person.

  40. Cove on January 7, 2021 at 12:18 am

when i saw the owl i immediately thought jack 0-0

  41. Samuel S on January 7, 2021 at 12:18 am

Not trying to flex but I have aphantasia… but I can imagine smells and tastes, when im sad I usually think of the taste of M&Ms to make me feel better

  43. mateusz molenda on January 7, 2021 at 12:21 am

  44. Jerry Rodriguez on January 7, 2021 at 12:22 am

    I called the owl Alister

  45. The Scuf on January 7, 2021 at 12:22 am

I thought of Henry as well, what can I say he’s a Henry.

  46. Dubanx on January 7, 2021 at 12:22 am

Cool. As for cats vs dogs, there is a correlation there for intelligence and/or education. This channel is, fundamentally, an educational channel. The channel is about learning, and the people here are overwhelmingly interested in learning.

A lot of the answers probably come down to a combination of this and, as you mentioned, internet savviness.

  47. Jeetu Kumar on January 7, 2021 at 12:23 am

you hire freelancing polling service 😅

  48. Professional Shitpost on January 7, 2021 at 12:24 am

Who tf uses double spaces after a period?!

  49. Thelaretus on January 7, 2021 at 12:24 am

Interestingly enough, when you asked me to give an English name to the owl, I immediately thought of ‘Margaret’. ‘Why?’, you’ld ask… Well, in my language, Portuguese, _coruja_ (‘owl’) is a feminine noun. I’ld definitely never come up with a male name for it, as I can still barely resist the urge to call it ‘her’.

Anyway, lonely people seem more likely to have cats; and the impact of non-native-English-speakers in your audience is probably significant.

I dont think of myself as weird or normal. I’m beyond basic human concepts
